Builder's Case Study — MSP Origin Story

We Built It.
We Run It.
Here's What We Learned.

Cross Country Communications Corp. is a Texas MSP with 25 years in the field. HoneyTrap Pro™ wasn't built in a lab — it was built on our own network, tested against our own infrastructure, and deployed at our own clients before it was ever offered to anyone else.

"Every tool we sell, we run ourselves first. If I wouldn't stake my own network on it, I won't stake a client's network on it. HoneyTrap Pro started on my bench with off-the-shelf hardware. It's still running on my bench today — just better."

Built Because
Nothing Else Fit.

After 25 years running networks for small businesses, apartment complexes, dealerships, and medical offices across East Texas, the pattern was always the same: clients had firewalls, antivirus, maybe an RMM agent — but zero visibility into what was actually probing their networks from the inside out.

Enterprise honeypot platforms existed but cost $20,000 a year and required dedicated security staff to operate. Nothing existed for the MSP market that was affordable, white-labelable, and simple enough to deploy in 15 minutes at a client site.

So we built it. HoneyTrap Pro™ started as a proof of concept running on the CCC bench network. Over the course of a year it evolved into a full appliance platform — purpose-built hardware, a cloud management portal, and hardened to a production standard that we'd stake real client networks on.

The rule was simple: every feature had to work on our own network before it went anywhere near a client's.

From Bench to
Production

Every version was deployed on the CCC network first. Nothing shipped to a client that hadn't been running on our own infrastructure for weeks.

Origin
Proof of Concept — Bench Network
Low-cost single-board hardware running honeypot scripts on the CCC internal network. The concept worked. The platform didn't exist yet.
Hardware Migration
HoneyTrap Pro™ Appliances — Production Hardware
Migrated to purpose-built HoneyTrap Pro™ appliances for improved performance and reliability. Zero-touch provisioning workflow built for rapid MSP deployment.
Cloud Platform
HoneyCloud™ — Cloud Management Portal
Built the full cloud management platform — multi-tenant MSP portal, remote dashboard proxy, shared threat intelligence feed, white-label branding engine.
Client Deployments
First Production Sites — Real Attack Data
Deployed across residential and enterprise client sites in Texas. Real attacks logged within hours of deployment. Every bug found in production was fixed on the bench unit first.
Now
Full Platform — 22+ Services · Full Integration Stack
Firewall auto-block, EDR IOC sharing, RMM ticketing, AI attack analysis, canary tokens, session recording, scheduled reports. Still running on the CCC bench. Still improving every week.

Design Philosophy

Built by an MSP
for MSPs

Twenty-five years of field work produced four non-negotiable principles that shaped every decision in HoneyTrap Pro™.

01
Deploy in 15 minutes or don't ship it
MSP technicians don't have hours at a client site. Zero-touch provisioning, USB imaging, and automatic phone-home configuration mean a unit is live before the tech leaves the building.
02
Never touch production traffic
HoneyTrap Pro™ lives on its own isolated dedicated network segment with no routing to production networks. It listens — it never interrupts. A misconfigured honeypot that takes down a client's network is worse than no honeypot at all.
03
White-label or it doesn't exist
MSPs built their brands over years. Every customer-facing element — reports, dashboards, alert emails, the portal itself — carries the MSP's brand, not ours. HoneyCloud™ is invisible.
04
Do it right or don't do it at all
Twenty-five years in the field taught one lesson above all others: a half-done security tool creates false confidence. Every feature is verified end-to-end before it ships. No shortcuts.

Field Intelligence

What Running It on
Our Own Network Taught Us

You learn things from running a honeypot on a real network that you can never learn in a lab. These are the lessons that shaped the product.

Attacks don't stop
Within hours of a new deployment going live, it sees probes. Not days — hours. Small business networks are not obscure. They are actively targeted around the clock by automated scanners that don't care how small you are.
RDP is the front door
Across every deployment, RDP consistently accounts for the overwhelming majority of attack volume. If a client has RDP exposed — even on a non-standard port — it is being hammered. No exceptions.
Secured networks still need it
Our automotive dealership deployment proved that a hardened perimeter doesn't make a honeypot unnecessary — it makes it more important. The question isn't if something gets through. It's when, and whether you'll know.
Clients don't believe it until they see it
The single most effective sales tool is showing a client their own attack log three days after deployment. The conversation changes completely when the threat is no longer theoretical.
Integrations multiply the value
A standalone honeypot that sends an email is a curiosity. A honeypot wired to firewall auto-block, EDR IOC creation, and an RMM ticket is a response platform. The integrations are the product.
The bench unit never stops
Every update, every new feature, every bug fix runs on the CCC bench unit before it ships. The master bench unit has seen every version of HoneyTrap Pro. That's the QA process — and it works.
